Extra Copy

My mom ordered me a paperback of Fire of the Covenant (turns out she didn't have it), but I believe we accidentally ordered 2 copies (which she'll probably eventually keep). For now it is available for someone to borrow.

Oh, and good thing I have more than a month to read this... it's a thick book :)

Book Club changes

At the last meeting, we discussed whether we wanted to have this group be an official enrichment group. The consensus at the meeting was that we would like to have an unofficial book club so we would not have to get each book approved. Therefore, all announcements for this book club will be sent via e-mail from Anna and will also be posted on this blog.

There is a strong possibility of an official enrichment book club beginning. If you would rather participate in a book club that will be reading approved books, or participate in both, information will be announced through the enrichment committee.

January: "The Fire and the Covenant"

There will be no December book club. The next book is "The Fire and the Covenant" by Gerald N. Lund. If you click on the title of the book, there is a listing for the book at Half.com which has several copies for less than $5 each.

Date and Time: Thursday, January 24th at 7:00 PM

Location: Anna Shirley's home

I've picked the book for February 2008: "The Solace of Leaving Early" by Haven Kimmel. I thought I would let you all know in advance so that you can track down a copy. I know that the Avon library has at least one copy. Half.com (click on the title) also has copies for less than $5 each.

The book for November's meeting is "The Ladies' Auxiliary" by Tova Mirvis.

Date and time: November 29th at 7:00 PM
Location: Ali Louthain's home

Come with book recommendations or suggestions so we can get them approved and set up a schedule for next year.

OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER

Hey y'all!!

Just FYI the next book we are reading is "Twilight" and it will be discussed at Erika Pike's on OCt. 25th. November we will be reading "The Ladies' Auxillary". It's a book we did in another book club and everyone really enjoyed it. I will get the author to you ASAP. We will be discussing that book at the Louthain's Nov. 29th. (All except Keri who is due the day before!)
We need to pump some life into our book club!! We had such a great discussion last time at Ashley's-it's too bad not more came!! So invite your friends and get some of our new comers to join! See you all later this month!

I like the blog.

This blog is really fun. Thanks, Erika, for sending me the link again. I have enjoyed reading each of the books so far, and it's nice to be introduced to some I was not aware of before joining "the club." Looking forward to seeing you all on the 20th.

September 27th

Hello Book Clubbers, The next meeting will be at Ashley Hansen's house. The book is A Long Way From Chicago and is a cute easy read. I hope to see you all there. --Keri

Hello out there!

I recently began Killer Angels and finished it in a matter of days! That was a really well written book and I am sorry I was out of town when book club was supposed to happen last. When do we meet again? I didn't realize that "Long way from Chicago" was the first in a series, I was wondering why the author wasn't wrapping things up at the end!

Quote of the Night

"It is good to be married to a MAN" --Erika Pike

Correct me if I misquoted you Erika. I had a good chuckle over this comment.

Thanks to everyone who came on Thursday. I had a lot of fun. I hope you can all find copies of the next book "Killer Angels." I will be taking my copy to Utah with me. I will be back on July 11th and should be done. If you are a fast reader and want to borrow the book you are welcome to it. The next meeting will be on July 19th at my house. I hope to see you all there. Happy Reading, Keri

10 Things Learned at Book Club

10. You miss out on some good Wii boxing and bowling if you leave early (i.e. before 10 pm)!
9. Scott really wishes he could be in book club (let's be honest, how many husbands would openly get involved in book club discussions like he does - even if brief).
8. Jane Austen was one intelligent woman.
7. Michella does the best job at putting fire in the debate (oh, I mean "discussion").
6. We will notice if you check yourself out in mirrors too much.
5. Ashley might have a little Fanny in her.
4. Erika might have too little Fanny in her.
3. Don't call Gail "Sister Cowley" (especially if you're asking her to pray).
2. Keri is the best hostess ever (I think I've been to her house for activities this year more than anyone else's).

and finally,
1. We are glad we're married to men.

This Thursday!!!

Don't forget: Book Club is this Thursday!

(I still have to finish the books... or maybe I'll just be happy with finishing one of the two).

See you all then, Erika

May 24th

I am such a confusing host. The Book Club will be on May 24th. That is a Thursday. It will be at my house again at 7pm. Michella is going to lead the discussion. I hope everyone can come and we can have a lively discussion. Everyone take care and keep reading or watching movies whatever suits your fancy.

scrapping?

I know, off the topic of book club! Erika and I were talking today about getting together to do a little SCRAPBOOKING! I know that there hasn't been a ward scrapbooking "club" or whatever you'd like to call it, since I moved in... so I think we need to reinstitute one. Okay!? Whose in? Well, there are at least two of us, Erika and me! We were thinking of going to Cord Camera's scrapbook studio in Plainfield. (check out the link) They have a crop night once a month on a Friday night from 6 until midnight, or however long you want to stay. The cost is only $15, with $10 going towards anything you buy that night. They have treats and drinks there... we did this in my old ward, and it was a great girls night out. I thought it would be super fun... The next crop night is Friday May 18. What do you say!?! If you are in, call the studio and make your reservation. I hope to see everyone there =)

I'll join in!

So the May 26th meeting will be on a Saturday? I'm going through my calendar and just checking that I have it right.

So Happy

I'm so glad that it's not until May. Now I'll actually be able to finish at least one of the books!

If you're having trouble with Mansfield Park, Michella made a good point - try really hard to get past the first 100 pages and it will get easier.

Now, if you want to watch a VERY PG-13 movie, you could always watch Mansfield Park (the 1999 version), and then it makes following along a lot easier... but I do not want to say that you need to watch this only because there are parts of the movie that need to be fast forwarded.

Persuasion is totally safe to watch, though, and it may also help with following the story line if the very verbose Jane Austen is hard to follow.

I'm glad that people are finally starting to check in on here!

p.s. Keri - I'm going to want to play the wii again :)

oops!

Okay! I was getting ahead of myself. We do not meet until May 26th. It looks as if this is the Keri and Erika book club blog. Is anyone else reading this?

April or May?

April/May... anyone?

Book Club is still in May, right?

Monday, April 9, 2007

Not that I'm complaining...

How did we get it moved one month earlier? Will we continue on every other month after that (sorry if I'm asking questions for which answers were given in RS yesterday...)?

Erika

Meeting on April 26

Hello Book Clubbies,

Just a reminder that our next meeting is on April 26th. It will be at my house and Michella Jameson will be leading the discussion of Persuasion and Mansfield Park.

I hope you can all make it.

Keri Edwards

I hope you're all reading...

The next meeting of Book Club is still a month and a half away, but I hope you're all enjoying Mansfield Park and/or Persuasion.
I also hope you all realize that you too can post on this site. Tell us what you're thinking about the book. Are you going to watch the movies instead because life is just too busy (don't do that, silly!)?

Available Copies

I have one copy each of Mansfield Park and Persuasion available for loan. They are the tiny ones from Barnes & Noble, so if you don't like small print, you might not like reading these.

Just let me know if/when you want to borrow them.

Erika

Welcome

We had a wonderfully productive first meeting of the Avon Ward Book Club.

This blog can be used for whatever purposes we desire, but mostly as a history and forum of the books we read and discuss. It can only be viewed by those invited, so if you know other women that would like to become part of the book club, let me (Erika) know by emailing me at erika_pike@yahoo.com

You will find a list of the books we chose to read for the next six or so months on the right hand side. Know that these may change, but you will receive notice if they do.

Happy Reading!

Erika

p.s. If you have your own blog and would like a link on the side of this page, email that to me as well.
